By JC Campbell - The game of golf has proved to be an excellent way for older people to keep themselves active and in good health. Now that the days of youth have gone and energetic sports are a thing of the past, senior citizens can still enjoy playing a sport that is competitive and motivating. For some older people, the game of golf gives them a reason to get out of bed in the morning and helps them maintain a healthy mind and body. Regardless of age, a person can continue to enjoy this wonderful sport, often doing so in the company of friends and family who may be much younger.

As the years pass, we may lose some of our strength and flexibility, preventing us from pursuing the type of sport we played in our younger days. Too many people choose to become idle and lethargic once they lose the ability to share in more active kinds of sport. This is a mistake and can only lead to living a sluggish existence free of exercise. The tendency might be to spend too much time sitting in front of a television screen when you still have the health and strength to get out on the golf course and enjoy the fresh air. Just think of how beneficial it can be to walk nine or eighteen holes, especially if you can do so in the company of others.

Playing golf in later life has another important advantage. It is a game you can play with your own children and grandchildren, no matter how young they may be. There are not many sports that can be enjoyed by people of all generations who want to play on a level playing field but golf is one such sport. Thanks to the unique handicap system used in golf, young and old, male and female can all play together and compete with each other in a meaningful way. The pleasure of sharing time with loved ones on the fairways can last a lifetime and many have proved this to be true.

When the golden years have arrived and the halcyon days of youth are gone, it does not mean we can no longer enjoy the sporting life. Golf is a timeless game that does not discriminate against those who are no longer in the prime of life. It is sad to see people become stagnant later in life, somehow concluding that because they can no longer run or jump, they should simply be inactive. Good health and vitality are open to all, including those who have reached the later years. Of all the things an older person could choose to do, playing golf is without a doubt one of the most beneficial and enjoyable.

The golf swing involves many different muscles and parts of the body. With all those components it's probably one of the most difficult and complex athletic moves that a person can make. Compare it to a complex piece of equipment that performs a certain task. The more moving parts that equipment has, the more likely it is to break down and need either major or minor adjustments.

Your golf swing works the same way. It involves so many movements and different factors, something is almost certain to go wrong. Just like the person who repairs the broken equipment needs to determine which piece of the equipment went bad, you need to know what has gone wrong with your golf swing before you can improve it.

Return to the Basics
Back when you were first learning how to play golf, you were probably very careful about how you did it. You carefully considered each and every step you had to perform while you were swinging your club. You needed to do this because golf was new to you and it wasn't second nature. As time passed by, you probably became more relaxed and concentrated less on each of the individual movements that make up the golf swing.

You also need to realize that if you built bad habits into your golf swing when you were first beginning, now they are ingrained as part of your muscle memory. You'll need to start breaking down every portion of your golf swing and really concentrate while you're doing it if you want to improve your swing. Hopefully you will be able to identify your swing flaws.

The golf swing is a complicated medley of complex movements and the naked eye just doesn't do a good job of catching every nuance. For this reason a video recording of their golf swing is essential for any golfer who is serious about improving. Through watching yourself swing and putting the video in slow motion you should be able to see your weaknesses and dramatically improve your golf swing.

Concentrate on Your Pre-Swing Mechanics
Focusing in on your pre-swing mechanics may be another way to drastically improve your golf swing. Make sure your head is in the right position. You also need to make sure your body is squared up properly and the ball is in the right position. Check that you have the correct stance and your weight is distributed the way it should be. Ensure that you're using a good grip and that your wrists maintain the proper positions throughout your swing. Some golfers have difficulty achieving a full range of motion during their swings.

You should be able to improve your golf swing if you concentrate on all the different aspects of your pre-swing as well as your actual swing. You will be able to play better and lower your scores. Better rounds of golf mean you will enjoy the game much more while you're out on the course.

What Does Fitness Have To Do With Golf?

If you really want to see improvements in your game, start stretching on a regular basis.

D. Rutti - You may know that the size of your stomach predicts your chances of having a heart attack and that tight jeans look a lot better on a well toned derriere, but did you know that there is also a connection between your level of physical fitness and your golf swing? It's true! Something as simple as stretching on a regular basis can actually make you a better golfer.

A loose, limber body will always perform better in any type of physical sport...and that includes golf. It turns out that football players and gymnasts aren't the only ones who need to keep their bodies in shape to perform well. Golf may not require barreling down the field with a helmet on or balancing on a thin beam, but it does require the ability to move freely and twist and turn smoothly.

The Golfer's Stretch
We are not saying you need to commit to complicated workout program and spend all your free time in the gym. You can actually get a tremendous benefit just from stretching your body in certain ways on a regular basis. The key here is "on a regular basis." Consistency is required to see any type of physical improvements, and that includes stretching to improve your game.

Many people do some minor stretches just before hitting the course, but this is actually not very effective. If you want to see some real improvements in your game and in the way you feel while out there hitting the ball, you need to do stretches that have proven to make a difference for golfers and perform them at least a few times a week.

There are some great programs which will show you simple stretches that can be done in the mornings before putting on your clothes for work or just before going to bed. They won't take you but a few minutes and are very easy to work into your daily life so they become a routine. Once they become a routine you will do them without thought and you will notice improvements in your game as well.

The Extra Mile
Doing stretches proven to make a difference for golfers will loosen up your body and change the way you move and twist while playing golf, but there are some extra incentives if you want to go the extra mile and do even more to improve your overall fitness.

If you incorporate a day or two of strength training into your life or start doing some type of cardio workouts along with your golfer's stretching, you will notice even greater differences in your life...that includes your golf swing, your love life, and even your career.

Yoga is also a great thing as it increases the mind-body connection and relaxes the entire body so you are more focused mentally. Again, this will help all aspects of your every daily life, but will translate into a better golf game as well.

This doesn't have to be intense and it doesn't have to consume all your free time. Golf is a much better way to pass the time, that is certain! Yet, those who really want to see improvements in their game will have to start stretching on a regular basis. If you decide to go a step beyond that you will only benefit all the more, but stretching is absolutely essential to the making of a great golfer.

D. Rutti - Some people question whether golf is actually a sport. They think it's just a game, something similar to chess, I guess. They certainly don't think golf is played by athletes or by anyone else who needs to be physically fit.

Those people are wrong. It's obvious they've never played golf. Anyone who has ever spent time with this great sport knows just how physically demanding golf can be. It's definitely important to be physically fit when you want to play golf as well as you can.

Getting fit for golf may be even more important for women's golf than it is for mens golf, but golf fitness for women probably gets far less attention. Women often lead more sedentary lives than men. After all, many of us work in offices, sitting behind desks all day. Some men, such as construction workers and auto mechanics, have jobs that require and build up their physical fitness. That gives those men an automatic advantage on the golf course. Most women don't have that advantage, so they need to work a little harder on their golf fitness. But that's not the only reason we need to work harder to succeed at the game of golf.

Many women lack the type of upper body strength that so many men almost seem like they were born with. But as much as we would like to have strong upper bodies, strong and stable legs are even more important for a woman golfer. It's obvious that walking up and down all those hills requires strong legs, but so do long drives. Not many people realize that the length of a golfer's drives comes directly from leg strength and balance.

Core strength and balance are crucial to playing the best womens golf. Flexibility also plays an important role. After all, if you're not flexible enough to keep your arms straight while swinging them around your body, you won't be able to swing a club properly. Your backswing will be too short and you won't be able to follow through the way you would like. Flexibility is essential to building a repeatable and effective golf swing.

It's no coincidence that strength, stability, and balance are the three keys to golf fitness, in addition to being the three keys to successful golf. They are every bit as important to women's golf as they are for men. It's just that these key characteristics can be harder for women to achieve because women have a built-in disadvantage. Women have far fewer muscle fibers than men. In other words, women are built differently than men. Their muscles are weaker, so women have to work harder to achieve golf fitness. But we can do it!

Women can step up their golf fitness using a variety of exercises and workouts, include stretching and other flexibility training, cardio training, strength training, core strengthening and specific techniques that improve your overall balance. All will increase your golf fitness if you are diligent. You can exercise in private at home, or if you like you can join a gym or a health club. Either way, you'll gain a competitive advantage and add to the enjoyment you get from playing this great sport of golf.

By JA Amos – As an amateur golfer, you are more than likely going to know that golf can be a rather tiring game. While many people see it as a relaxing and slow sport, when you actually stop and think about what is involved with the game, you soon start to realize that there is quite a bit more to it than simply just taking a swing and hitting the ball.

Think about it – you have to take a swing, hit the ball and then you have to go and collect it. Now depending upon how far you have managed to hit the ball, this can be quite a trek! There may be buggies available to help you, but most of the time golfers have to walk quite a distance even with the buggies available. This means that you can quickly become tired and that can then start to affect the way that you play.

So if you want to really improve your game, you have to first improve your golf fitness.

What Golf Fitness Entails

When it comes to preparing the body for golf, there are some specially designed exercises that you can do. Now that while it is always good to be as fit as possible by doing as much exercise as possible, if you do not do the right exercises then it will not help your golfing game. This is because you need to focus upon certain parts of the body and ideally you should get a professional evaluation to see exactly which areas you need to improve upon.

However it all depends upon how dedicated you are to the sport. So you need to decide whether you just want to relax and enjoy the sport, or whether you would like to improve to a professional level instead.

Generally golf fitness includes:

Realizing your current weaknesses

Learning to prepare before a game

Improving coordination

A proper Diet

By improving all of the above, you should start to see the positive results fairly quickly. No golfer has ever got to where they are now without putting in the extra effort. So if you want to improve your game then you need to be willing to pull out all of the stops and get your fitness in tip top condition.

Finding Out Your Weaknesses

Before you can even begin to improve upon your fitness, you need to first understand what your weaknesses are. Every golfer is different and you could have trouble with your swing, whereas others may have trouble getting their grip right. Whatever it is that you feel needs to be improved upon, that is what you need to focus your attention on.

There is a simple way to know where your weaknesses lie and that is to give yourself a quick golf fitness evaluation. The best way to do this is to start by standing in a golf pose. Behave as you would when you are just going to swing the club. Feel the tightness in your muscles and try and figure out whether any part of your body is tighter than the rest of your body.

Often muscles can become tense if you are worried about your swing. Even if you do not realise it, this can affect your swing and that in turn will affect how far the ball actually goes. So if you want to improve your swing, you need to first sort out your muscles and find a way to improve your posture so that you are not as tense or stressed.

Learning How to Prepare

The secret to a great round of golf is to prepare yourself fully before the big game. This generally mainly includes mental preparation, as the mind is by far one of the most powerful weapons that you have and if it is not focused, you will not play overly well.

You can improve your overall fitness as much as is humanly possible, but if you are not prepared mentally then you will never win a round. Self belief and determination are two of the main qualities that professional golfers have. So for an amateur golfer, this is definitely one of the main things that you have to improve upon.

In order to prepare, you need to focus upon all of the things that could potentially go wrong. Get to know your course that you are playing at and work out where the potential danger spots are. Once you get a good idea of the course, you can then start to plan how you can avoid the potential dangers and what you can do if you are faced with them.

By knowing the dangers and having a rough idea of how you can overcome them, you will not become too stressed when you are out on the course. It allows you to have a clear mind and that is what will help you to win against your opponent.

Improving Your Coordination

Another way to improve your golfing abilities is to improve your coordination. You need to be able to look at the direction in which you want the ball to go, as well as using the perfect swing to get it there.

In order to do this, you need to know exactly where to place your body and how to have everything set up in order to find your perfect swing. You Will need to have a basic understanding of how the body works in terms of movement and you need to practice in order to learn how to hit the ball as precisely as possible.

It might help you to watch other more professional golfers. You will be able to see how they stand, how they move and how they ultimately hit the ball. This should give you some tips on how it is done and how you might be able to improve.

One of the main factors of a good golf swing which you will notice when you watch professional golfers is steady legs. You need strong legs in order to be able to keep them grounded whilst your make your swing. If they aren’t, you risk swaying backwards or forwards and that will affect your golf swing and how far the ball travels.

By improving your coordination, you are likely to hit the ball further, as well as being able to hit it more precisely too. Poor coordination can be damaging to the game and it is something that many golfers do not consider when they are looking to improve.

Golf and Nutrition

The final thing that you need to think about if you are to improve your game is your nutrition. What do you currently eat? Is it a healthy diet? If not then it is more than likely that you will struggle on the golf course.

Proper golf fitness needs to be combined with a healthy diet in order for you to achieve the best possible results. So if you are used to eating regular takeaways then you seriously need to start thinking of changing your diet. By changing to a healthier, more nutritious diet your body will instantly start to improve and you will really notice the difference. You will have more energy which will allow you to feel more refreshed both before and during the game.

If you look at many amateur golfers today, they quickly become tired as the game progresses. If you are to win a round of golf, you need to be at your best and so if you have more energy, you have a much better chance at winning.

Basically a healthy diet consists of plenty of fruit and vegetables and you should also drink plenty of water too. Cut down on the fat that you eat and just eat as healthily as possible.

Overall if you follow these tips you should notice a huge improvement in your game. Most golfing problems are there because the amateur golfer does not know how to correct them. It really is not as difficult as you would imagine changing the way that you play. Even professional golfers have to put a lot of time and effort into improving their game.

So, if you want to be better at golf, you just need to be able to concentrate, focus on your weaknesses and come up with ways to improve upon them. Watch other golfers and see how they move and how they swing. It could be that your backswing needs a lot of improvement? Whatever it is that you need to do, ensure that you spend all of your time improving your technique and you will eventually get there.

You also need to focus your mind.

Think about the challenges that you face within the golf course and work out potential ways to get around them. By being mentally prepared you can approach the game in a more positive way which will in turn help you to hit more precisely and with a lot more focus than you usually would.

By JC Campbell – The mental side of golf is perhaps one of the most important and one of the most difficult aspects to master. Golf is a game played between the ears, a fact confirmed by the greatest players ever to grace the sport like Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. The mental approach to the game of golf is crucial even for those who have the kind of natural talent found in top professionals. Because golf is a sport involving any number of variables, it will naturally call for good decision making.

The mental approach to golf is one of the most interesting facets of this great Royal and Ancient game. There must be very few golfers, if any, who do not have the goal of game improvement, something that for many, comes down solely to their mental attitude. The mental side of golf involves making good decisions that will have real impact on your game.

If you are a golfer who has played the game for some time, there comes a point when you reach a level of performance that will not greatly improve. For example, when you first start playing the game, you are likely to shoot high scores. As you continue to play regularly, your game dramatically improves until you reach that point where you have hit your personal ceiling. That ceiling might be five, ten, fifteen handicap or higher. Because of age, strength and general ability, you may hit your tee ball 200-250 yards and know only too well that you will never hit it 300 even on a good day.

Does reaching this personal level mean we can no longer improve? Definitely not! This is where using our mental powers become so important, as we endeavor to create a strategy that will allow us to play the best we can and possibly reach heights we never thought possible. Being a fifteen-handicapper doesn't preclude shooting in the 70s, or a ten-handicapper from shooting par.

Golf is a fascinating game when we approach it from the mental side, thinking about how we plan to play the course, rather than how we are going to swing the club. Decision making when playing golf can begin even before we step on the first tee. In fact, we can make sound, game improving decisions while lying in bed, having breakfast or driving to the course. Try this suggestion before you set off for your next golf game, particularly if you will be playing a familiar course. Think your way through every hole on the golf course and decide there and then, what you will play from every tee, weather conditions permitting.

Deviate from your regular practice of simply hitting driver on every par 4 or 5. Are there some short par fours that you could easily reach using 3-wood or even an iron from the tee? Could you play each par 5 with an iron for your second shot, as opposed to playing the 3-wood which often puts you in trouble? Determine this before you begin to play and stick to it.

Another suggestion: Do you find that your iron shots to greens come up short most of the time? One major winning professional from days gone by once said, cruelly perhaps, that the safest place to stand when watching amateurs play, is "directly behind the flag, because they never reach it". Try experimenting with this strategy on your next round. Once you have determined your distance to the pin and selected your iron for the shot, put the club back in your bag and take the next one down, so 8 iron becomes 7 iron. Remember, the difference between clubs is only 10-15 yards per club. Review your performance using this tactic and see if it results in a noticeable improvement.

The key is to make those decisions before you pick up a club and determine in advance, the strategy you will follow on the course. Paying more attention to the mental side of your golf game can only improve your game and you may also be very pleasantly surprised as you analyze your scorecard at the 19th hole.
