By JC Campbell - The game of golf has proved to be an excellent way for older people to keep themselves active and in good health. Now that the days of youth have gone and energetic sports are a thing of the past, senior citizens can still enjoy playing a sport that is competitive and motivating. For some older people, the game of golf gives them a reason to get out of bed in the morning and helps them maintain a healthy mind and body. Regardless of age, a person can continue to enjoy this wonderful sport, often doing so in the company of friends and family who may be much younger.

As the years pass, we may lose some of our strength and flexibility, preventing us from pursuing the type of sport we played in our younger days. Too many people choose to become idle and lethargic once they lose the ability to share in more active kinds of sport. This is a mistake and can only lead to living a sluggish existence free of exercise. The tendency might be to spend too much time sitting in front of a television screen when you still have the health and strength to get out on the golf course and enjoy the fresh air. Just think of how beneficial it can be to walk nine or eighteen holes, especially if you can do so in the company of others.

Playing golf in later life has another important advantage. It is a game you can play with your own children and grandchildren, no matter how young they may be. There are not many sports that can be enjoyed by people of all generations who want to play on a level playing field but golf is one such sport. Thanks to the unique handicap system used in golf, young and old, male and female can all play together and compete with each other in a meaningful way. The pleasure of sharing time with loved ones on the fairways can last a lifetime and many have proved this to be true.

When the golden years have arrived and the halcyon days of youth are gone, it does not mean we can no longer enjoy the sporting life. Golf is a timeless game that does not discriminate against those who are no longer in the prime of life. It is sad to see people become stagnant later in life, somehow concluding that because they can no longer run or jump, they should simply be inactive. Good health and vitality are open to all, including those who have reached the later years. Of all the things an older person could choose to do, playing golf is without a doubt one of the most beneficial and enjoyable.

By JC Campbell - The search for the perfect swing is the holy grail for golfers all over the world as they strive to find an action that will permit them to play the game to a high standard. Grooving a golf swing that is repeatable and dependable can only be achieved through practice, and this will require time and patience. Trying to perfect a swing while playing in competition is never advisable as you cannot possibly give your full concentration to the areas that need attention. Professional golfers will work tirelessly on their swings, some even hiring teachers who will give advice on elements of the swing. For recreational golfers, perhaps securing the services of a club professional will help, but for most golfers, it is a case of trial and error on the practice range. What can you do to improve you swing?

The starting point for anyone who hopes to improve their game is to ensure that the fundamentals are in place. These include a good grip, proper stance, correct alignment and tempo of the swing. When the basics are in place, you will be in position to hit golf shots that are reasonably good. Your next step is to experiment with things that may improve your swing allowing you to hit the ball longer, straighter and with more spin. For example, ball position is something that can have a real impact on your swing as it often determines the angle at which you approach the ball and how this affects your arms and shoulders on the downswing. If you position the ball too far toward your front foot, this can encourage an over-the-top pass at the ball, probably resulting in a pull or a slice. On the other hand, if you position the ball too far back in your stance, you may find you are blocking the ball to the right or hooking it wildly. Experiment with ball position and you will most likely find that placing the ball in the middle of your stance or just fractionally toward your front foot will reap dividends. On longer clubs like the driver, the ball will be further toward your front foot.

A tip you will find helpful when working on grooving your golf swing, is to experiment on the practice range with different tempo swings. Some recreational golfers swing very hard and fast in order to attempt to hit the ball further. You may be surprised to find that with a more leisurely, smooth swing, you will actually achieve greater distance. In reality, you want to hit the ball better, not harder. Fast swings tend to pull the arms into play too quickly and this often results in cutting across the ball, leading to a slice. The tempo of your swing is possibly the most crucial element you can work on as it will promote a repeatable swing you can rely on under pressure. In fact, you can groove such a swing in the garden at home without the need to hit golf balls. Find the tempo that works best for you, and make this part of your golf game.

Another element that impacts on your swing is how you stand to address the ball. This can make a real difference to the quality of your shots and determine how high or low your ball trajectory will be. It can also influence how you bring the club head to the ball. Are you possibly stretching for the ball at address? Or is your stance too upright causing you to slice? Again, take time on the practice range to experiment by hitting shots while taking a variety of address positions. A tall person will naturally stand more upright to the ball while a shorter person will reach more for the ball and have a flatter swing. On that subject, if you are serious about grooving a solid, repeatable golf swing, you would do well to make sure you are using golf clubs suited to your height. Badly fitted clubs will have you swinging on an arc that is unnatural and will inevitably result in hooking or slicing.

As is true for even the best of players, grooving a good golf swing is a matter of practice. You may find that there is a great deal of trial and error involved until you find a swing that suits you individually. Do not treat this as a chore, but enjoy those times you spend on the practice ground, realizing that it will result in a better golf swing that will in turn, allow you to derive greater enjoyment from the game and improve you score.

With an entire range of choices in woods, irons, wedges, and putters, young golfers can get everything they need.

More young people are playing golf than ever before. But they face a dilemma. Like anyone, they want to maximize their game. But standard golf equipment is designed for adults. Fortunately, in every area, there is junior golf equipment to help them get the most out of their efforts.

Shoes are the most obvious item. But that problem was really solved centuries ago, since shoes have always come in multiple sizes from baby to behemoth. Adapting the unique features of golf shoes for the younger set was a natural and shoemakers moved into that market a long time ago.

The result today is a full line of models and styles for girls and boys. With appropriately set spikes and materials adapted to their needs, any young golfer can find just the right shoe.

Less obvious, until they get on the course when the problem becomes clear, are golf clubs. But it doesn't take long to realize that a standard wood will be far too long for duffers under 50 inches tall. Yet, simply reducing the shaft length is only one consideration. The whole physics of the swing changes for shorter, less powerful golfers. And since their weight, strength and height can vary so much as young golfers mature, manufacturers knew they had to deliver options to suit a much broader market.

Golf club makers have stepped up to the challenge. With an entire range of choices in woods, irons, wedges and putters young golfers can get everything they need.

Starter sets with 25% lighter heads suit those ages 6-8 perfectly. Designed for those 3'0" to 3'8", these clubs get them going in the right direction from the very beginning. For those 3'8" to 4'4" tall and others there are sets that contain only the three clubs (3 wood, 7 iron and putter) they need for the majority of shots. A flatter lie angle helps junior golfers prevent closing the clubface at impact, minimizing frustration as they learn.

Other options include wedges specifically geared toward those not yet 50 inches tall. With lighter headweights and greater offset for optimal clubface angle, they've been designed from the ground up to match the style of the developing duffer.

But those clubs have to sit in something when they're not being swung. Junior golf bags accommodate these shorter clubs perfectly. With durable material and super strong straps, they'll stand up for years to the punishment they'll get. With modified stands and easy to use telescope controls, they're ideal for the younger crowd.

Gloves, hats and the whole range of apparel have also seen special treatment to fit the younger golfer. Junior golf clothing and accessories provide them with all the accoutrements they need to optimize their experience on the course.

Don't leave the kids at home when you want to play a few rounds. Take them along and you'll quickly find how eager they are to learn and how well they do with equipment designed just for them.

The golf ball has evolved considerably over several hundred years from its early use in Holland and Scotland.

Centuries ago the 'featherie' was designed, a leather pouch stuffed with wet goose feathers. As it dried, the feathers expanded and the leather shrunk, forming a very hard semi-elastic ball that could go quite a distance by historical standards. Around the turn of the 20th century, the gutta percha came into widespread use. Dimpled and made of Malayan rubber, it was the first major advance in golf ball construction and revolutionized the game.

Today, materials science and golf physics has brought the golf ball to new heights, figuratively and literally.

Covered with Surlyn (a special DuPont rubbery plastic) the ball comes in various forms. A 1-piece is essentially just a uniform hard plastic ball. They're cheap balls used only for practice by beginners. The 2-piece is a solid plastic resin core wrapped with Surlyn. The 3-piece uses a core wrapped with elastic windings that are then covered. A 4-piece adds another layer but is the same basic design.

All these changes in material and geometry helped improve flight and distance characteristics. The dimples break up airflow around the surface, reducing drag and providing longer flight times. That maximizes distance. A smaller proportion than you might think results from the compressive feature of the golf ball.

Weights today are not to be greater than 1.620 oz (45 g) and the size no more than 1.680 inches (38 mm) and the ball must be spherical. Even the maximum initial velocity is determined by professional golfing regulations, as is the maximum permissible distance it can travel on a drive.

When choosing a golf ball, golfers will examine the size and construction to meet their own goals, though. Some prefer the greater control afforded by a 3-piece, others will want the durability and lower cost of a 2-piece.

Knowledgeable golfers will also look to the compression value, a number that ranges from 0-200. All 3-piece balls and some 2-piece ones carry this number. A ball that has zero compression is rated 200 (not zero - go figure). A ball that will compress under load by 2/10th inches or more is rated zero. For every 1/1000th inch of compression under load they receive one lower point, starting from 200.

Golfers shouldn't put too much emphasis on the compression number. Surface geometry and material play a much larger role than elasticity in flight character, including distance traveled after impact.

Whichever you choose, it's hard to go wrong these days. Materials and design are so advanced today that even modest cost balls are typically superior to the average golfer. How they're struck has a much bigger effect than the exact size, weight, or construction.

Choose a golf ball based on your budget and whether you enjoy the way it feels and flies and you'll soon discover that's the one for you.

D. Rutti - Learning to play golf has opened up a whole new world for many who may have thought their sporting days were over. A game that parents or grandparents can play alongside young children is a great way to enjoy family relationships in a healthy outdoor setting. There are not many sports that offer the opportunity for all generations to play together and compete on a level playing field thanks to the unique handicap system employed in the game of golf.

Unlike many other sports, golf is a game for all. From the very young to the older generation, people of all ages can enjoy this wonderful sport and do so in a meaningful way. Most sporting pursuits involve running or some other exertion and will most likely become a thing of the past as we reach an age where we are no longer as mobile as in our younger days. Perhaps this is why many people take up the game of golf in later life when they no longer feel fit enough to pursue the more vigorous sports they enjoyed in youth.

One of the advantages of golf is that it closes the generation gap so often evident in sport. When a person begins reaching middle age, it can be the beginning of the end for certain sporting activities like football, soccer, or baseball. If you play golf however, you still have decades of fun ahead of you as you enjoy a life of activity on the golf course. While there may be a tendency for some to become couch potatoes when their sporting days are over, the game of golf allows us to continue to be active and improve our health as we walk the fairways. There is nothing more enjoyable than a round of golf on a good day, taking in the scenery while enjoying the companionship of family or friends.

Another benefit to be enjoyed as we play golf regularly is the opportunity to make new friends. Golf is a very sociable game and many have made friends for life in their pursuit of the perfect swing. Some will join a golf club and make friends with other club members while others may do so when visiting new golf courses while on vacation. Friendships formed on the golf course can be long lasting and open up the opportunity to develop a wide circle of acquaintances who are also attracted by the game. The same principle applies even in the business world as connections are often made on the golf course.

There are numerous benefits to playing golf. The golf course has long been a place to cement family relationships and friendships, a place to make business contacts and a means to improve your health while enjoying the natural beauty of the world around you.

The golf swing involves many different muscles and parts of the body. With all those components it's probably one of the most difficult and complex athletic moves that a person can make. Compare it to a complex piece of equipment that performs a certain task. The more moving parts that equipment has, the more likely it is to break down and need either major or minor adjustments.

Your golf swing works the same way. It involves so many movements and different factors, something is almost certain to go wrong. Just like the person who repairs the broken equipment needs to determine which piece of the equipment went bad, you need to know what has gone wrong with your golf swing before you can improve it.

Return to the Basics
Back when you were first learning how to play golf, you were probably very careful about how you did it. You carefully considered each and every step you had to perform while you were swinging your club. You needed to do this because golf was new to you and it wasn't second nature. As time passed by, you probably became more relaxed and concentrated less on each of the individual movements that make up the golf swing.

You also need to realize that if you built bad habits into your golf swing when you were first beginning, now they are ingrained as part of your muscle memory. You'll need to start breaking down every portion of your golf swing and really concentrate while you're doing it if you want to improve your swing. Hopefully you will be able to identify your swing flaws.

The golf swing is a complicated medley of complex movements and the naked eye just doesn't do a good job of catching every nuance. For this reason a video recording of their golf swing is essential for any golfer who is serious about improving. Through watching yourself swing and putting the video in slow motion you should be able to see your weaknesses and dramatically improve your golf swing.

Concentrate on Your Pre-Swing Mechanics
Focusing in on your pre-swing mechanics may be another way to drastically improve your golf swing. Make sure your head is in the right position. You also need to make sure your body is squared up properly and the ball is in the right position. Check that you have the correct stance and your weight is distributed the way it should be. Ensure that you're using a good grip and that your wrists maintain the proper positions throughout your swing. Some golfers have difficulty achieving a full range of motion during their swings.

You should be able to improve your golf swing if you concentrate on all the different aspects of your pre-swing as well as your actual swing. You will be able to play better and lower your scores. Better rounds of golf mean you will enjoy the game much more while you're out on the course.

What Does Fitness Have To Do With Golf?

If you really want to see improvements in your game, start stretching on a regular basis.

D. Rutti - You may know that the size of your stomach predicts your chances of having a heart attack and that tight jeans look a lot better on a well toned derriere, but did you know that there is also a connection between your level of physical fitness and your golf swing? It's true! Something as simple as stretching on a regular basis can actually make you a better golfer.

A loose, limber body will always perform better in any type of physical sport...and that includes golf. It turns out that football players and gymnasts aren't the only ones who need to keep their bodies in shape to perform well. Golf may not require barreling down the field with a helmet on or balancing on a thin beam, but it does require the ability to move freely and twist and turn smoothly.

The Golfer's Stretch
We are not saying you need to commit to complicated workout program and spend all your free time in the gym. You can actually get a tremendous benefit just from stretching your body in certain ways on a regular basis. The key here is "on a regular basis." Consistency is required to see any type of physical improvements, and that includes stretching to improve your game.

Many people do some minor stretches just before hitting the course, but this is actually not very effective. If you want to see some real improvements in your game and in the way you feel while out there hitting the ball, you need to do stretches that have proven to make a difference for golfers and perform them at least a few times a week.

There are some great programs which will show you simple stretches that can be done in the mornings before putting on your clothes for work or just before going to bed. They won't take you but a few minutes and are very easy to work into your daily life so they become a routine. Once they become a routine you will do them without thought and you will notice improvements in your game as well.

The Extra Mile
Doing stretches proven to make a difference for golfers will loosen up your body and change the way you move and twist while playing golf, but there are some extra incentives if you want to go the extra mile and do even more to improve your overall fitness.

If you incorporate a day or two of strength training into your life or start doing some type of cardio workouts along with your golfer's stretching, you will notice even greater differences in your life...that includes your golf swing, your love life, and even your career.

Yoga is also a great thing as it increases the mind-body connection and relaxes the entire body so you are more focused mentally. Again, this will help all aspects of your every daily life, but will translate into a better golf game as well.

This doesn't have to be intense and it doesn't have to consume all your free time. Golf is a much better way to pass the time, that is certain! Yet, those who really want to see improvements in their game will have to start stretching on a regular basis. If you decide to go a step beyond that you will only benefit all the more, but stretching is absolutely essential to the making of a great golfer.

D. Rutti - Some people question whether golf is actually a sport. They think it's just a game, something similar to chess, I guess. They certainly don't think golf is played by athletes or by anyone else who needs to be physically fit.

Those people are wrong. It's obvious they've never played golf. Anyone who has ever spent time with this great sport knows just how physically demanding golf can be. It's definitely important to be physically fit when you want to play golf as well as you can.

Getting fit for golf may be even more important for women's golf than it is for mens golf, but golf fitness for women probably gets far less attention. Women often lead more sedentary lives than men. After all, many of us work in offices, sitting behind desks all day. Some men, such as construction workers and auto mechanics, have jobs that require and build up their physical fitness. That gives those men an automatic advantage on the golf course. Most women don't have that advantage, so they need to work a little harder on their golf fitness. But that's not the only reason we need to work harder to succeed at the game of golf.

Many women lack the type of upper body strength that so many men almost seem like they were born with. But as much as we would like to have strong upper bodies, strong and stable legs are even more important for a woman golfer. It's obvious that walking up and down all those hills requires strong legs, but so do long drives. Not many people realize that the length of a golfer's drives comes directly from leg strength and balance.

Core strength and balance are crucial to playing the best womens golf. Flexibility also plays an important role. After all, if you're not flexible enough to keep your arms straight while swinging them around your body, you won't be able to swing a club properly. Your backswing will be too short and you won't be able to follow through the way you would like. Flexibility is essential to building a repeatable and effective golf swing.

It's no coincidence that strength, stability, and balance are the three keys to golf fitness, in addition to being the three keys to successful golf. They are every bit as important to women's golf as they are for men. It's just that these key characteristics can be harder for women to achieve because women have a built-in disadvantage. Women have far fewer muscle fibers than men. In other words, women are built differently than men. Their muscles are weaker, so women have to work harder to achieve golf fitness. But we can do it!

Women can step up their golf fitness using a variety of exercises and workouts, include stretching and other flexibility training, cardio training, strength training, core strengthening and specific techniques that improve your overall balance. All will increase your golf fitness if you are diligent. You can exercise in private at home, or if you like you can join a gym or a health club. Either way, you'll gain a competitive advantage and add to the enjoyment you get from playing this great sport of golf.

By JA Amos – As an amateur golfer, you are more than likely going to know that golf can be a rather tiring game. While many people see it as a relaxing and slow sport, when you actually stop and think about what is involved with the game, you soon start to realize that there is quite a bit more to it than simply just taking a swing and hitting the ball.

Think about it – you have to take a swing, hit the ball and then you have to go and collect it. Now depending upon how far you have managed to hit the ball, this can be quite a trek! There may be buggies available to help you, but most of the time golfers have to walk quite a distance even with the buggies available. This means that you can quickly become tired and that can then start to affect the way that you play.

So if you want to really improve your game, you have to first improve your golf fitness.

What Golf Fitness Entails

When it comes to preparing the body for golf, there are some specially designed exercises that you can do. Now that while it is always good to be as fit as possible by doing as much exercise as possible, if you do not do the right exercises then it will not help your golfing game. This is because you need to focus upon certain parts of the body and ideally you should get a professional evaluation to see exactly which areas you need to improve upon.

However it all depends upon how dedicated you are to the sport. So you need to decide whether you just want to relax and enjoy the sport, or whether you would like to improve to a professional level instead.

Generally golf fitness includes:

Realizing your current weaknesses

Learning to prepare before a game

Improving coordination

A proper Diet

By improving all of the above, you should start to see the positive results fairly quickly. No golfer has ever got to where they are now without putting in the extra effort. So if you want to improve your game then you need to be willing to pull out all of the stops and get your fitness in tip top condition.

Finding Out Your Weaknesses

Before you can even begin to improve upon your fitness, you need to first understand what your weaknesses are. Every golfer is different and you could have trouble with your swing, whereas others may have trouble getting their grip right. Whatever it is that you feel needs to be improved upon, that is what you need to focus your attention on.

There is a simple way to know where your weaknesses lie and that is to give yourself a quick golf fitness evaluation. The best way to do this is to start by standing in a golf pose. Behave as you would when you are just going to swing the club. Feel the tightness in your muscles and try and figure out whether any part of your body is tighter than the rest of your body.

Often muscles can become tense if you are worried about your swing. Even if you do not realise it, this can affect your swing and that in turn will affect how far the ball actually goes. So if you want to improve your swing, you need to first sort out your muscles and find a way to improve your posture so that you are not as tense or stressed.

Learning How to Prepare

The secret to a great round of golf is to prepare yourself fully before the big game. This generally mainly includes mental preparation, as the mind is by far one of the most powerful weapons that you have and if it is not focused, you will not play overly well.

You can improve your overall fitness as much as is humanly possible, but if you are not prepared mentally then you will never win a round. Self belief and determination are two of the main qualities that professional golfers have. So for an amateur golfer, this is definitely one of the main things that you have to improve upon.

In order to prepare, you need to focus upon all of the things that could potentially go wrong. Get to know your course that you are playing at and work out where the potential danger spots are. Once you get a good idea of the course, you can then start to plan how you can avoid the potential dangers and what you can do if you are faced with them.

By knowing the dangers and having a rough idea of how you can overcome them, you will not become too stressed when you are out on the course. It allows you to have a clear mind and that is what will help you to win against your opponent.

Improving Your Coordination

Another way to improve your golfing abilities is to improve your coordination. You need to be able to look at the direction in which you want the ball to go, as well as using the perfect swing to get it there.

In order to do this, you need to know exactly where to place your body and how to have everything set up in order to find your perfect swing. You Will need to have a basic understanding of how the body works in terms of movement and you need to practice in order to learn how to hit the ball as precisely as possible.

It might help you to watch other more professional golfers. You will be able to see how they stand, how they move and how they ultimately hit the ball. This should give you some tips on how it is done and how you might be able to improve.

One of the main factors of a good golf swing which you will notice when you watch professional golfers is steady legs. You need strong legs in order to be able to keep them grounded whilst your make your swing. If they aren’t, you risk swaying backwards or forwards and that will affect your golf swing and how far the ball travels.

By improving your coordination, you are likely to hit the ball further, as well as being able to hit it more precisely too. Poor coordination can be damaging to the game and it is something that many golfers do not consider when they are looking to improve.

Golf and Nutrition

The final thing that you need to think about if you are to improve your game is your nutrition. What do you currently eat? Is it a healthy diet? If not then it is more than likely that you will struggle on the golf course.

Proper golf fitness needs to be combined with a healthy diet in order for you to achieve the best possible results. So if you are used to eating regular takeaways then you seriously need to start thinking of changing your diet. By changing to a healthier, more nutritious diet your body will instantly start to improve and you will really notice the difference. You will have more energy which will allow you to feel more refreshed both before and during the game.

If you look at many amateur golfers today, they quickly become tired as the game progresses. If you are to win a round of golf, you need to be at your best and so if you have more energy, you have a much better chance at winning.

Basically a healthy diet consists of plenty of fruit and vegetables and you should also drink plenty of water too. Cut down on the fat that you eat and just eat as healthily as possible.

Overall if you follow these tips you should notice a huge improvement in your game. Most golfing problems are there because the amateur golfer does not know how to correct them. It really is not as difficult as you would imagine changing the way that you play. Even professional golfers have to put a lot of time and effort into improving their game.

So, if you want to be better at golf, you just need to be able to concentrate, focus on your weaknesses and come up with ways to improve upon them. Watch other golfers and see how they move and how they swing. It could be that your backswing needs a lot of improvement? Whatever it is that you need to do, ensure that you spend all of your time improving your technique and you will eventually get there.

You also need to focus your mind.

Think about the challenges that you face within the golf course and work out potential ways to get around them. By being mentally prepared you can approach the game in a more positive way which will in turn help you to hit more precisely and with a lot more focus than you usually would.

Avid golfers are always on the quest for a perfect golf swing. It can be a golfer's biggest joy or greatest frustration, and some give up thinking the challenge a futile one. However, if you do have a problem with your golf swing, it is not the worst thing in the world to admit it. As a matter of fact, it is considered by many, a good first step towards improvement.

Many people make all sorts of excuses about why their game isn't as wonderful as they might like. They blame things like the weather, external issues like the way the golf course is set up and the like. In actuality, it might be just as easy as recognizing that their golf swing is lacking, and that if they can correct this core issue, it won't matter what the course or the weather that they play in.

Today, there are many good products out there that can improve, if not perfect a person's golf swing. For instance, there are different devices that can assist a golfer to maintain his or her proper position. There are a number of devices that will insure that the wrists stay in the proper alignment during the entire golf swing. There are also aids that will make sure that the golfer seeking to have a perfect swing gets a full range of motion during the swing. Also there are golf training books and DVD’s designed specifically to help with swing, positioning, stance, and more.

Knowing what the perfect golf swing looks like will go a long way towards getting your swing up to par. There are a number of different methods that can be utilized to accomplish this goal. Here are just a few:

You can tape a professional golfer in action on the television.

You can purchase a DVD that will instruct you on the ins and outs of attaining that perfect golf swing.

You can go to a golf professional and pay for an assessment of your swing.

Buy a specialized software package, video tape your swing and load it on your PC, and have the software analyze your swing.

After you have your analysis, take that advice and work from there to make the suggested adjustments. You might invest in a training aid or DVD series that can assist you as you work towards golf swing perfection. With all of the helpful methods available, you can be well on your way to improving and ultimately perfecting your golf swing.
