By JC Campbell - The search for the perfect swing is the holy grail for golfers all over the world as they strive to find an action that will permit them to play the game to a high standard. Grooving a golf swing that is repeatable and dependable can only be achieved through practice, and this will require time and patience. Trying to perfect a swing while playing in competition is never advisable as you cannot possibly give your full concentration to the areas that need attention. Professional golfers will work tirelessly on their swings, some even hiring teachers who will give advice on elements of the swing. For recreational golfers, perhaps securing the services of a club professional will help, but for most golfers, it is a case of trial and error on the practice range. What can you do to improve you swing?

The starting point for anyone who hopes to improve their game is to ensure that the fundamentals are in place. These include a good grip, proper stance, correct alignment and tempo of the swing. When the basics are in place, you will be in position to hit golf shots that are reasonably good. Your next step is to experiment with things that may improve your swing allowing you to hit the ball longer, straighter and with more spin. For example, ball position is something that can have a real impact on your swing as it often determines the angle at which you approach the ball and how this affects your arms and shoulders on the downswing. If you position the ball too far toward your front foot, this can encourage an over-the-top pass at the ball, probably resulting in a pull or a slice. On the other hand, if you position the ball too far back in your stance, you may find you are blocking the ball to the right or hooking it wildly. Experiment with ball position and you will most likely find that placing the ball in the middle of your stance or just fractionally toward your front foot will reap dividends. On longer clubs like the driver, the ball will be further toward your front foot.

A tip you will find helpful when working on grooving your golf swing, is to experiment on the practice range with different tempo swings. Some recreational golfers swing very hard and fast in order to attempt to hit the ball further. You may be surprised to find that with a more leisurely, smooth swing, you will actually achieve greater distance. In reality, you want to hit the ball better, not harder. Fast swings tend to pull the arms into play too quickly and this often results in cutting across the ball, leading to a slice. The tempo of your swing is possibly the most crucial element you can work on as it will promote a repeatable swing you can rely on under pressure. In fact, you can groove such a swing in the garden at home without the need to hit golf balls. Find the tempo that works best for you, and make this part of your golf game.

Another element that impacts on your swing is how you stand to address the ball. This can make a real difference to the quality of your shots and determine how high or low your ball trajectory will be. It can also influence how you bring the club head to the ball. Are you possibly stretching for the ball at address? Or is your stance too upright causing you to slice? Again, take time on the practice range to experiment by hitting shots while taking a variety of address positions. A tall person will naturally stand more upright to the ball while a shorter person will reach more for the ball and have a flatter swing. On that subject, if you are serious about grooving a solid, repeatable golf swing, you would do well to make sure you are using golf clubs suited to your height. Badly fitted clubs will have you swinging on an arc that is unnatural and will inevitably result in hooking or slicing.

As is true for even the best of players, grooving a good golf swing is a matter of practice. You may find that there is a great deal of trial and error involved until you find a swing that suits you individually. Do not treat this as a chore, but enjoy those times you spend on the practice ground, realizing that it will result in a better golf swing that will in turn, allow you to derive greater enjoyment from the game and improve you score.

The golf swing involves many different muscles and parts of the body. With all those components it's probably one of the most difficult and complex athletic moves that a person can make. Compare it to a complex piece of equipment that performs a certain task. The more moving parts that equipment has, the more likely it is to break down and need either major or minor adjustments.

Your golf swing works the same way. It involves so many movements and different factors, something is almost certain to go wrong. Just like the person who repairs the broken equipment needs to determine which piece of the equipment went bad, you need to know what has gone wrong with your golf swing before you can improve it.

Return to the Basics
Back when you were first learning how to play golf, you were probably very careful about how you did it. You carefully considered each and every step you had to perform while you were swinging your club. You needed to do this because golf was new to you and it wasn't second nature. As time passed by, you probably became more relaxed and concentrated less on each of the individual movements that make up the golf swing.

You also need to realize that if you built bad habits into your golf swing when you were first beginning, now they are ingrained as part of your muscle memory. You'll need to start breaking down every portion of your golf swing and really concentrate while you're doing it if you want to improve your swing. Hopefully you will be able to identify your swing flaws.

The golf swing is a complicated medley of complex movements and the naked eye just doesn't do a good job of catching every nuance. For this reason a video recording of their golf swing is essential for any golfer who is serious about improving. Through watching yourself swing and putting the video in slow motion you should be able to see your weaknesses and dramatically improve your golf swing.

Concentrate on Your Pre-Swing Mechanics
Focusing in on your pre-swing mechanics may be another way to drastically improve your golf swing. Make sure your head is in the right position. You also need to make sure your body is squared up properly and the ball is in the right position. Check that you have the correct stance and your weight is distributed the way it should be. Ensure that you're using a good grip and that your wrists maintain the proper positions throughout your swing. Some golfers have difficulty achieving a full range of motion during their swings.

You should be able to improve your golf swing if you concentrate on all the different aspects of your pre-swing as well as your actual swing. You will be able to play better and lower your scores. Better rounds of golf mean you will enjoy the game much more while you're out on the course.

Avid golfers are always on the quest for a perfect golf swing. It can be a golfer's biggest joy or greatest frustration, and some give up thinking the challenge a futile one. However, if you do have a problem with your golf swing, it is not the worst thing in the world to admit it. As a matter of fact, it is considered by many, a good first step towards improvement.

Many people make all sorts of excuses about why their game isn't as wonderful as they might like. They blame things like the weather, external issues like the way the golf course is set up and the like. In actuality, it might be just as easy as recognizing that their golf swing is lacking, and that if they can correct this core issue, it won't matter what the course or the weather that they play in.

Today, there are many good products out there that can improve, if not perfect a person's golf swing. For instance, there are different devices that can assist a golfer to maintain his or her proper position. There are a number of devices that will insure that the wrists stay in the proper alignment during the entire golf swing. There are also aids that will make sure that the golfer seeking to have a perfect swing gets a full range of motion during the swing. Also there are golf training books and DVD’s designed specifically to help with swing, positioning, stance, and more.

Knowing what the perfect golf swing looks like will go a long way towards getting your swing up to par. There are a number of different methods that can be utilized to accomplish this goal. Here are just a few:

You can tape a professional golfer in action on the television.

You can purchase a DVD that will instruct you on the ins and outs of attaining that perfect golf swing.

You can go to a golf professional and pay for an assessment of your swing.

Buy a specialized software package, video tape your swing and load it on your PC, and have the software analyze your swing.

After you have your analysis, take that advice and work from there to make the suggested adjustments. You might invest in a training aid or DVD series that can assist you as you work towards golf swing perfection. With all of the helpful methods available, you can be well on your way to improving and ultimately perfecting your golf swing.

By JC Campbell - There are a number of key elements that go into executing a good golf shot and your backswing is definitely one of them. How you take the club back will determine to a great extent how well you strike the ball at impact. If your backswing is on plane, you are more likely to come back to the ball on the correct plane and make solid contact. Conversely, if you are inclined to take the club back too far on the inside or to the outside, you will have difficulty bringing it back on the correct plane, resulting in a poorly hit shot that could leave you in trouble.

The most common backswing fault among recreational golfers is to take the clubhead back too far on the outside. The problem with this move is that it leaves the club laid off at the top of the backswing and promotes a downswing that also comes too far from the outside. This kind of swing usually results in a weak slice, the standard shot for high handicap golfers. There are simple drills you can do to ensure your backswing is one that will encourage a repeating swing, one that leads to solid contact every time. For example, try sticking a rod in the ground just outside the line you want your backswing to follow. The key is to avoid hitting the rod as you take the club back. A simple drill but one that works.

The same drill can be employed if your problem is taking the club back too far on the inside. Again, placing an object in the line of your faulty arc will encourage you to bring the club back on a better plane. This is something you can practice on the range or even in your back garden at home. Try to feel the sensation of grooving a backswing that puts your club in good position at the top. If you have been in the habit of bringing the club back too far outside the line (and most golfers do), it will feel strange for a while until you make this first move part of your regular game.

Another simple adjustment you can make to ensure your backswing tracks more on the inside is to open the clubface a little before you take the club away. This will promote a swing that is more on plane if your tendency has been to swing outside the line. You can spend all the time you want beating balls on the driving range but until you develop a good backswing, you will never hit the ball as you want. The backswing is inextricably linked to the downswing and must affect how you bring the club back to the ball. Improving your backswing will be sure to improve your game.

By JC Campbell – Because golf can be such a difficult game to master, players are always on the lookout for ways to make it easier and some have resorted to tampering with their clubs in order to gain extra distance or extra spin. The R&A and the USGA have regulations in place that govern the construction of clubs and those who wish to adhere to the rules and the spirit of the game, play golf according to these directions. This precludes using golf clubs considered illegal or tampering with golf clubs to gain an unfair advantage.

The regulations cover the materials used, the construction of the club and the kind of grooves that are used on the face of clubs. There are numerous illegal golf clubs out there and many recreational golfers will happily use them because they are not involved in club or amateur competitions of any kind. For those who play golf seriously and participate in tournaments or club competitions, it is imperative that they use only legal golf clubs.

Some want to use drivers with forbidden materials in order to get more spring off the face, giving them added distance off the tee. Others opt for irons deemed illegal due to the groove pattern, designed to impart more spin on the ball. There are also some chippers that are illegal in competition, clubs that are more like putters with extra loft. Illegal clubs are either manufactured as such or are adjusted in some way to make them illegal.

Making adjustments to standard, legal golf clubs can turn them into illegal clubs and some do this again to give their club head more weight in order to gain extra distance. When all is said and done, the key to good golf is the swing and if we feel we need to tamper with clubs or buy illegal ones, it may reveal we need to spend more time on our game. Resorting to the use of illegal clubs reveals a flaw in our golf game and would perhaps indicate that we do not have too much confidence in our own ability to play well.

Illegal clubs may be acceptable within our little golf group where there is nothing at stake. However, when we choose to play in some kind of tournament golf or club competition, we need to conform to the rules of the governing bodies who determine which clubs are illegal. Rather than seek an unfair advantage, we would be better served trying to improve our overall game, ensuring that the scores we post after eighteen holes are genuine. Play by the rules and enjoy!

By JC Campbell – Walk into any golf store and you will observe that there are numerous brands of golf balls on display, some with instantly recognizable brand names and others you will struggle to identify. Keeping in mind the variation in cost from one brand to another, does it really make a difference to your game? While it is understandable that professional golfers will choose to play the top brand golf balls such as the Titleist Pro V, for recreational golfers, it is worth considering whether it really does make a difference to their golf game.

The golf ball brand might in some way give a golfer more credence when playing with his regular golf partners. Would he perhaps feel that to be considered a serious player, he should be sure to use only what the professionals would? When a golfer regularly shoots in the 80s or 90s, it has to be said that the brand of ball will be unlikely to have any real effect on his game. Too many players have convinced themselves that the more expensive their golf equipment, the better they will play. Experience shows that this is not so. Buying Titleist Pro V golf balls which are designed to impart extra spin will be of little value to a player who does not make good contact with the golf ball when he swings his club.

The way the marketing and advertising companies promote golf equipment somehow manages to convince average golfers that they are above average and that they will somehow play like a professional if they use the same equipment. The hard fact of life is that recreational golfers are happily throwing large sums of cash at golf clubs and golf balls that are having no real effect on the way they play the game. For some, it is a matter of pride. Showing up for a game of golf sporting Top Flite golf balls is out of the question for some who would consider this embarrassing. They somehow feel they will lose credibility with their playing partners by using a cheaper brand golf ball.

A true test for such average golfers would be to hit a variety of golf ball brands out on the golf course and take note of any differences they observe. The likelihood is that they will hit the lesser known brands the same distance as any other, possibly even further. Some of the cheaper brands are constructed in a different way from the top range balls. They are harder in construction and may actually suit the swings of recreational golfers who do not have the swing speed of professionals, players capable of compressing the ball on impact. For many golfers, it's time to swallow their pride, buy some cheaper brand balls and save themselves a fortune!

We all want to be better immediately, but that's not possible. What is possible is that if you practice correctly and do your homework, you can quickly own a swing to be proud of and be well on your way to hitting controlled, powerful shots. However, that's not all there is to golf. You must have a good short game. If you work on your short game, you will continually improve your ability to get the ball in the hole. Of course, as with anything, how fast you improve depends upon the quality and frequency of your practice. Here are a few rules which you would do well to follow.

Rule 1 - Be nice to yourself.
Be your own best friend. Talk to yourself in a nurturing, helpful, positive way. Have you ever called yourself stupid for hitting a bad shot? Don't. Maintain your self esteem and your sense of humor. It is just a game isn't it?

Rule 2 - If you want to improve your swing, slow down and forget about contact.
If you want to improve your swing, concentrate on your swing, not contact. If you attempt to focus on both swing and contact at the same time, you will get neither, and that's no fun. Practice your swing and make sure it is correct. You will have to slow way down to make a good swing, and that's OK. Your brain will learn whatever you teach it, whether you go fast or slow. So if you want to learn the correct swing, practice slowly and perfectly, and gradually add speed later. Contact is easy. When your swing is ready, contact will be a matter of simple adjustment. If the swing is not there first, contact could be a real problem.

Rule 3 - Remove the word "bad" from your vocabulary.
Once you are ready to start hitting balls, watch your shots closely until the ball stops rolling. Become very interested in where the ball goes, but do not judge undesirable results as bad. There is no failure, only feedback. You swing, the ball goes somewhere, you say "Hmm, interesting,'' and you try again. For instance, if you make a swing and determine that you made a club path error, instantly forget the shot, and take a couple of practice swings with the perfect club path to remind yourself of what you wanted to do.

Immediately replace an errant swing with the right swing and tell yourself "That's the swing!" You need to enjoy your good shots. Get psyched about them. That which you give more attention to becomes more strongly imprinted in your mind, so store only the results you want to repeat. It doesn’t mean you have to celebrate with champagne every time you hit a good shot, but most certainly you should give yourself a big smile and congratulate yourself! Don't just assume that you should hit them all that way.

Golf is a game, and games are for fun. Right? So have fun. Have fun learning and experimenting with all the facets of the game. Have fun making mistakes. Mistakes are good because they point out weaknesses in your game which, when improved, will make you a better golfer. Walk whenever you can and have fun getting exercise among the beautiful scenery. Always keep these rules in mind. Your positive golf mentality and energy will help your golf swing development dramatically.

By Patrick M. Kennedy – Seniors, if you are new to the game of golf, or are considering taking it up to fill that extra time on your hands, follow the bouncing ball. Maybe a little information can help you to decide. Lessons are for another day. Golf is such an all-the-rage, controversial tradition of potential happiness, the best that can be done here is to summarize and categorize information, quote the experts, and allow the golf ball idea to settle down where it may. Just remember, before you proceed into this world, standing on a golf course does not make you a golfer any more than standing in a garage makes you a hotrod.

Also, remember, it is a game for perfectionists. You must get the ball into the hole, not once, but 18 times, specifically, 18 times each game. Close is not good enough. Try it a few times and get thoroughly lambasted by your playing partners, and you will learn. Consequently, it becomes the source of aggravation and the dusty accumulation of bent drivers and putters.

There are so many off-the-wall rules, antidotes, quotes, personal tales, techniques, training hints and philosophies, the only useful revelations may possibly come by stuffing them all into a ball washer and letting it spit them willy-nilly onto the green … you probably will get a better lie.

Some of the basic rules for domestic safety are – never go golfing with your wife, or never go golfing with your husband, because there will begin the nubbin of an endless debate. As one unknown duffer (hacker) said, “I've spent most of my life golfing ... the rest I've just wasted.” This goes a long way in describing the commitment and madness of some to a hobby of following a small, white ball around the world, no matter where it lies. You will soon wonder if you are ready for this journey in retirement.

Now let us put golf into perspective and separate it from other activities. The most elegant and successful pursuer of this insanity, Tiger Woods, has broken it down a bit for us. "Hockey is a sport for white men. Basketball is a sport for black men. Golf is a sport for white men dressed like black pimps." And the bowler Don Carter, “One of the advantages bowling has over golf is that you seldom lose a bowling ball.” He has a firm finger-hole grip on the game.

And note this; honesty has a dubious existence in golf. Most have heard of it, thought about it, seen it, and accidentally, maybe, have done it, namely, kicked a ball from behind a tree or pile of cow dung to get an unimpeded shot at the flag. Arnold Palmer (of Arnie’s Army) one of the greatest hackers of all time exposed why he and others are so successful. He is a great teacher of the tricks of the trade, “I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone's golf game … it is called an eraser.” Many aficionados support the revelation that golf is a lot of walking, broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic, and maybe a good eraser or creative caddy might help. “Isn't it fun to go out on the course and lie in the sun?” jibed golf nut Bob Hope, and this man had a tournament named after him.

The best advice before the first golf lesson is, learn how to stand and to move like a pretzel. “Have you ever noticed what golf spells backwards?” asks Al Boliska, but do you know it also stands for God’s Ol’ Lunatic Fun. “The only times my prayers are never answered are on the golf course,” observes Billy Graham, under his breath.

Exercise, fun, socializing, and entertainment are the overriding goals of this game, but with restrictions. “If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt,” said the well-know expert, Dean Martin, who always had a shot in his hand. “I play in the low 80s. If it's any hotter than that, I won't play,” admitted Joe E. Lewis. Then there is the exercise. “Golf is golf. You hit the ball, you go find it. Then you hit it again,” long time professional duffer, Lon Hinkle, simplified the absurdity.

This is all good advice to be absorbed as you mull over the possibility of pursuing this time killer. A golfer's diet, besides eating crow and chewing on knuckles after a slice or hook, is living on greens as much as possible.

There you have it. There are so many expert quotes and dehumanizing rules and reasons NOT to take up the sport of golf that you may be disheartened, but you cannot be, because there are also many more reasons to fulfill this dream!

One thing that certainly can affect your golf game is your golf swing. The most common technique for the pre-swing will require you to have the non-dominant side of your body facing where you want the ball to go. If you’re right handed the left part of your body would be facing where you would like to hit the ball.

You want to be sure that your body is aligned parallel to where you want to hit the ball. Your stance is going to be dictated by what type of club you are using. If you are using irons or a putter then you’re going to want to stand with your feet shoulder width apart.

When you’re using long irons or wooden clubs then you want to open up your stance a little more. Generally, you would want to be about 2 inches wider than shoulder width apart when using the heavy irons and wood. On the other hand, if you are using short irons then you want to shorten your stance a little. Generally, you’re going to want to be two inches narrower than shoulder width apart when you use short irons.

Ball placement will also dictate what type of club you are using. When putting or using short irons you want to put the ball in the middle of your stance. For middle and long irons and also woods you want to place the ball approximately 1 inch in front of the center of your stance.

Weight distribution will vary depending on what club you are using. If using a short iron then you want to have the majority of the weight on your front foot. If you are putting or using middle irons then you want to have equal distribution of weight on both feet. When using long irons or wood, then you will want to be sure the majority of your weight is on your back foot.

Next up is what grip you want to use. There are 3 common types of grips that most golfers use. You can use an overlapping grip, an interlocking grip, or a ten finger grip.

An overlapping grip is when the pinky finger on the dominant hand, if you’re right handed it would be your right hand pinky, is put between the index and middle finger of the non-dominant hand, if you’re right handed that would be your left hand. Your lead hand thumb, if you’re right handed that would be your right thumb, then would be placed on the lifeline on your non-dominant hand, if you’re right handed it would be your right hand on the lifeline of your left hand.

An interlocking grip is where the pinky finger of your dominant hand is intertwined with the index finger of your non-dominant hand. If you’re right handed it would be that your right pinky finger intertwines with your left hand index finger. Then your non-dominant thumb would be placed on the lifeline of your dominant hand. If you’re right handed your left thumb would be put on your lifeline of your right hand.

The 10 finger grip is a grip where you put the pinky finger of your dominant hand near the index finger of your non-dominant hand. If you’re right handed you would put your right pinky finger next to your left index finger. You then put the thumb of your dominant hand under the lifeline of your non-dominant hand. If you’re right handed you would put your left hand lifeline over your right hand.

Those are the basic mechanics of your pre-swing. You may already have known them, but it’s always good to check to make sure you are doing everything proper every time. Sometimes bad habits can work their way in without you even realizing it.
